In an exciting initiative to promote public transit among college students, the fourth installment of the College Transit Challenge recently took place in St. Louis. Advocated by Citizens for Modern Transit, this friendly competition brought together students from five local colleges, including Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis, encouraging them to embrace public transportation as they crisscrossed the region on buses and light rail.

On a warm Thursday morning, students donned their school colors, ready for a day filled with rides and fun. The challenge aimed to log as many trips as possible, culminating in a collective total of 240 rides. This event not only fostered school spirit but also illustrated the critical need for students to access and utilize local transit. According to Kimberly Cella, executive director of Citizens for Modern Transit, the competition is designed to engage students who may have never considered public transit as an option. “We know that this event is a fun, exciting way to pit five [schools] against each other to generate collegiate spirit,” she explained.

Each participating college is strategically located within easy access to local transit lines, making rides both convenient and affordable. Through the Metro U-Pass program, students can enjoy unlimited travel on buses and trains for a minimal fee. In fact, an impressive 78% of undergraduates own cars, yet only a mere 8% use public transit for their daily commutes. This disparity highlights the need for greater awareness and convenience associated with public transit options.
Conquering Accessibility Challenges
While the challenge demonstrated the excitement surrounding public transit, it also revealed significant barriers students face. Issues of inconvenient routing and infrequent service deter many potential riders. Some colleges, like the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), are working to create a culture of public transit use among students. Remy Xa, a student program manager at UMSL, emphasizes the need to showcase the vibrant experiences available in St. Louis, promoting exploration through organized field trips across the city.

This year's College Transit Challenge ended with Saint Louis University crowned the champion, marking a significant shift in the competition's history, as they broke Wash U's two-year winning streak.
