Philharmonia Baroque: A Musical Renaissance
The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra opened its new season this past weekend with a mesmerizing display of musical emotion that resonated deeply with the audience at First Congregational Church in Berkeley. The program featured a stunning array of stormy Italian concertos and cantatas, showcasing a blend of emotional intensity, virtuosity, and historical depth under the direction of visiting conductor Václav Luks.
Challenges and Triumphs in Baroque Revival
This marks an exciting period for the orchestra, especially as they transition under the guidance of new Music Director Designate Peter Whelan, set to officially begin in July 2026 after the departure of former music director Richard Egarr. Luks, well-known for his work with the Prague-based Collegium 1704, strategically curated a selection of challenging pieces that delve into the baroque emotional spectrum—a trademark of this vibrant musical era.
The evening commenced with a remarkable work by the once-revered Venetian master Baldassare Galuppi, whose rich and evocative concerto painted a sonorous backdrop of eerie and dramatic soundscapes. It was a fitting introduction to an evening steeped in emotional turmoil and beauty.
The Power of Storytelling Through Music
Central to this program were three vocal cantatas that narrated the painful stories of women plagued by heartbreak and guilt. The talented soprano Maya Kherani captivated the audience with her performance, most notably in Handel's "Armida abbandonata", displaying her phenomenal capacity to convey both power and tenderness. Kherani's vocal prowess shone brilliantly, especially in her upper register, effortlessly executing the challenging vocal requirements and leaving the audience breathless with audible gasps.
Closing the program was Vivaldi’s sacred cantata, "In furore iustissimae irae", which offered its own emotional rollercoaster—starting with righteous anger and culminating in moments of heartfelt devotion. The contrast in both richness and complexity between this and Marcello's "Arianna abbandonata" showcased the varying styles of baroque composition, although the latter did not quite match the impact of Handel’s profound work.
Striking Harmonies and Musical Conversations
The evening also included a concerto by Neapolitan composer Francesco Durante, featuring stunning solo contributions from the principal string section. Concertmaster Elizabeth Blumenstock, alongside violist Jessica Troy, and principal second violinist Manami Mizumoto, delivered captivating performances that added to the evening's overall brilliance. Luks not only conducted with passion but also participated instrumentally on the harpsichord, supported by a thoroughly engaged basso continuo section.
Community Engagement and Cultural Resonance
Philharmonia Baroque’s commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural community in the Bay Area was palpable throughout the concert. According to Executive Director & CEO Emma Moon, the orchestra aims to bridge past and present with thoughtful engagement initiatives. This season's theme, “Fury and Heartbreak,” illustrates their intent to connect the timeless emotional experiences of human life through music, making it accessible to all.
As we embrace this season of discovery, the orchestra invites audience members not only to witness the performances but also to partake in the communal experience these concerts offer. Whether through a shared laugh at a well-timed flourish or a collective sigh at a poignant aria, there is a shared journey that binds everyone in attendance.
Looking Ahead: A Promising Future
With the orchestra celebrated as a pillar of arts and culture, the audience left the hall with renewed excitement and profound appreciation for the skill and artistry on display. As Philharmonia Baroque embarks on this new chapter, the anticipation of what lies ahead is undeniably thrilling, hinting at a future filled with innovation and nostalgia.
This season presents a unique opportunity for both longtime patrons and new audiences to explore the emotional depth of baroque music. The vibrancy of the performances ensures that the orchestra will continue to thrive, inviting listeners to embark on a journey through the tapestry of human emotion, where music eloquently tells tales of woe and triumph.
