Uplifting Ukrainian Holiday Carols on Stage
This December, the Bay Area will witness a heartwarming celebration of Ukrainian culture as Ensemble Cherubim presents “Carols of Birds, Bells, and Peace from Ukraine: A Holiday Celebration” at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley. With guest artists and a diverse array of songs performed in Ukrainian, Yiddish, Church Slavonic, and Crimean Tatar, the concert promises to showcase the rich tapestry of Ukrainian heritage. Marika Kuzma, a first-generation Ukrainian American and professor emerita of music at UC Berkeley, directs this special event, a collective effort to celebrate and uplift Ukraine's vibrant culture amid adversity.
Celebrating Diversity Through Music
Scheduled for December 13 and 14, the concert features performances ranging from traditional holiday tunes to modern compositions that reflect the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people. Notable contributors include mezzo-soprano Frederica “Flicka” von Stade and the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir, enhancing the musical experience with a variety of vocal styles. Kuzma explains, “We will of course sing the famous ‘Carol of the Bells,’ which is by a Ukrainian composer but isn’t actually about bells in its original version. And we will also perform the authentic carol of bells from Ukraine.” This juxtaposition aims to educate the audience about the nuances and historical significance behind these cherished melodies.
Connecting Through Stories and Lyrical Heritage
The performance will be interwoven with spoken poetry and stories in English translation to provide context and emotional depth. Kuzma hopes to transport the audience to a place of gratitude as they experience the storytelling alongside powerful melodies. Additionally, projected images of the Ukrainian landscape will offer a visual representation of the culture being celebrated, ensuring an immersive experience that transcends mere performance.
Responding to the Call of Solidarity
In response to the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine amid the Russo-Ukrainian war, Kuzma felt compelled to represent the nation's cultural identity through this concert. Reflecting on the moment that inspired her, she recalls, “I saw that Zelenskyy was not treated with the dignity customarily given to world leaders. I wanted to respond somehow.” Through music, she hopes to showcase the resilience and beauty intrinsic to Ukrainian culture, turning the performance into a platform for solidarity. The concert is not just an artistic endeavor; it serves as a poignant reminder of the power of culture as a unifying force.
Anticipation for the Grand Finale
In a touching tribute, the finale will feature the carol “U Vyfleyemi” (In Bethlehem), a piece that holds special significance. Kuzma noted that “the sister of Hanna Havrylets, a beloved composer who died in the early days of the war, gave us permission to perform her carol. It’s fabulous and will include a special surprise.” This collaboration with living composers and honoring those who have passed on offers a profound emotional dimension to the concert.
How to Participate in the Celebration
The concert promises to resonate deeply with its audience, as Kuzma expresses her desire for attendees to leave with a sense of wonder and connection. “There is so much in this program for every person who will attend. We look forward to sharing Ukraine’s magic with you,” she states. For those looking to strengthen community bonds while enjoying a captivating cultural experience, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
